When you first get to know Drupal. You will come across a lot of terms. It is important to familiarize yourself with these drupal terms, otherwise it makes it very difficult to learn the power behind Drupal.
What is Drupal?
You will hear geeks say, that Drupal is a web content management system. But what if you don't even know what a content management system is? To put it simply, without having to run out and buy an expensive HTML editor like Dreamweaver or Frontpage, you can build a website without learning HTML using Drupal. If you can type out a sentence, use a mouse, cut and paste that sentence and hit the submit button with your mouse, you can build a website. If you take 2 people with very little technical savvy. You ask person 1 to take an HTML course to build a website using Dreamweaver or Frontpage, then you take a second person, it can even be a grandma, and ask them to download my free 10 week Drupal mini course, the grandma can build a website faster and more efficient by taking my easydrupaltutorials.com videos.
What is content type?
Drupal has 2 types of content or content types that are Drupal Core or that comes preinstalled Drupal, they are :
Story, Page.
As you want to add more features onto your Drupal site: you can enable the poll, forum, blog, book, video, images, etc. These are all content types. All the content types in Drupal share the same fields to fill in your information. They are the: title field, body or description field, creation date, track revisions.
What are users, roles and permissions?
What Are Users?
When you install a fresh vanilla copy of Drupal onto your web server, Drupal will let people who wish to contribute to your drupal site become a member or an authenticated user. Folks use members and users interchangeably they essentially mean the same thing.
What Are Permissions?
Everytime you turn on a module, you need to go to control access area to give you the administrator permissions to configure that module you just enabled. You can get there by navigating to: administer > User Management > Access Control.
I will tell you what a module is later in this blog entry.
What Are Roles?
Out of the box, drupal automatically creates 2 roles in your fresh install: authenticated and anonymous user. In addition, you will want to create you the superuser or administrator role. Once you have created the administrator role, you can create additional roles such as: rent a coder, elance bloggers, E-lance editors. As your Drupal site gets bigger and bigger it may become necessary to outsource some of the work to ask others to add content to your site. Each role you create can be granted different permissions.
What is an administrator?
If you follow my recommendation, the easiest and fastest way to Install Drupal is to sign up for a hosting plan with Bluehost Click here. When you use simple scripts to install Drupal, Bluehost will automatically create for you the super admin or super user login and password. I would recommend you cut and paste this Drupal login URL, login username and password into a notepad. The first thing you will need to do is create the Administrator role which is you. You will be the one to set the roles and permissions for all the different users you create.
